Salad Dressing Challenge

Alright everyone, who’s up for a challenge?  I challenge you…to stop buying salad dressings.  Yes that’s right.  Today is the day to ditch the preservative-laden, store-bought dressing in that crazy plastic squeeze bottle and start making your own.  The most common complaint I hear from people when I suggest a little more DIY in the food department is that they don’t have time.  Ok valid up to a certain point.  But seriously, making your own salad dressing is probably the easiest thing you can do and is a great step towards making healthier choices daily.

The utmost easiest salad dressing you can make is simply a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a bit of your favourite balsamic vinegar.  That can get a little boring after a while however.  And if you’re looking for a salad dressing that’s going to be bursting with health benefits, there are certainly many dressing recipes out there that can fit the criteria.

Below I’ve shared my favourite tried-and-true vinaigrette recipe.  The bonus of this recipe is you’re getting your daily dose of heart health, all in a tasty dressing.  Raw garlic and olive oil have been studied and used in the prevention of heart disease as well as the management of high cholesterol and blood pressure.  Not to mention apple cider vinegar can help prevent indigestion and curb bad breath as an added bonus.

Garlic, Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar Vinaigrette

What you need:

·      2 cloves of garlic, diced

·      1 tbsp local, organic honey

·      ½ cup raw, organic apple cider vinegar

·      ½ cup extra virgin olive oil

·      Salt and pepper to taste

Combine the above ingredients into a small mason jar with a lid and give it a good shake, until the dressing looks emulsified.  Drizzle on your favourite salad or use as a marinade for chicken or tilapia.  This dressing keeps for about 4-5 days and doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge.

See? Creating your own dressings can be so simple.  All it takes is a little imagination.
