I recently traveled to London, UK for a working vacation, most notably to shadow a cosmetic medicine doctor in Knightsbridge.  What I came back with was not only jet-lag and a cold but incredibly valuable knowledge in cosmetic injections.

I had taken a course back in January 2016 in Madrid, Spain to learn how to use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for skin rejuvenation.  (If you want to learn more about PRP injections, check out my previous blog on the topic).  Since PRP injections for skin rejuvenation are not widely used in the eastern part of North America, to get the best training you need to go to the source of it all - Europe.  London is a perfect place to learn more about cosmetic injections in general because it's such a common technique used, in addition to conventional cosmetic injections like Botox and Juvederm.  The added benefit of PRP injections however is that it's utilizing you own body's materials to help with tissue regeneration - essentially correcting the root cause and helping your body heal itself.

PRP helps our body lay down new collagen in areas of tissue loss as well as even out skin tone and correct scarring.  In other words, PRP is wonderful for not only correcting lines and wrinkles but also for acne scarring and hyperpigmentation.  I've seen wonderful case studies in my research and learning on the topic and have first-hand seen amazing transformations in overall facial tissue quality.

We can not only use PRP in cosmetics for slowing the aging process and correcting acne scarring but also for hair loss and wound healing.  Those with significant hair loss due to androgenic causes (think male-pattern baldness) can benefit from PRP injections to the affected areas.  PRP is also helpful in supporting wound healing by enhancing proliferation, migration and expression of important molecules involved in the wound healing process.  For example, active cystic acne lesions and acne rosacea can benefit from PRP injections.  Wounds on other parts of the body can also be improved with the application of PRP and this technique is even being used in surgical units throughout the country to help aid post-surgical wound healing.

Conditions benefitting PRP Skin Rejuvenation:

  • Acne vulgaris - scarring, hyperpigmentation and active lesions
  • Acne rosacea - scarring, hyperpigmentation and active lesions
  • Slowing the aging process
  • Aging skin - lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone
  • Wounds and minor scars

It is my belief that we are given one body to live in and it's up to us to take care of it.  From healthful nourishment and regular exercise to stress management and lifestyle changes - it's all important.  PRP skin rejuvenation is a wonderful addition to your self-care plan so you can age gracefully and love the skin you're in.  If it's lines and wrinkles or scarring from severe acne, PRP can help heal and improve the quality of your skin.
